Weebly Site Settings

Weebly Site Settings  categories

Weebly Site Settings is the control center for your Weebly website. The site settings in Weebly apply to the site as a whole and are generic to the entire site.

The other portion of settings in Weebly are Page level Settings which are local to the page. Check our previous article to learn more about the role the Weebly Site Settings and Weebly Page Settings and how they influence the published Weebly website.

In this article, we walk you through the six categories (General, SEO, Ecommerce, Mobile, Editors, Archive/Un-publish) of site settings in Weebly. The Site settings can be accessed from the “Settings” Tab in the Weebly Site Editor.

1. General Settings in Weebly

The General Settings is where you define how your site is generally accessed (or visible) to the outside world. You can set the website address, a title to your site, a password for protected pages, link your Facebook page etc in the general settings. This is also the place to change your Weebly website address or attach your custom domain name from here.

2. Weebly SEO Settings

These are the SEO settings for the site as a whole. Note that there are also Page level SEO settings, which you must check. This is the information fed primarily to search engines.

The Header Code and Footer Code here play an extended role. They serve as a place holder for your site wide customizations and additions. The contents of “Header Code” and “Footer Code” could be used for purposes that is beyond SEO. Your social sharing scripts, styling routines can also be placed in the Header and Footer code areas of your Weebly Site Settings.

Weebly SEO Site Settings
Site Description

This is the description that applies to the Home page of your Weebly site. If the home page has it’s own page level “Description”, then the page level description takes precedence.
Footer Code

Any thing placed in this field gets added to the bottom of every page of the site. Google Analytics or other scripts that need to be run after a page loads, should be added to this area. Usually this is the bottom of “body” tag for the page.
Header Code

The header code field is added to the beginning of the page. This is where, any code that needs to be run before the rest of the page is loaded, should be added. Google webmaster tools code for Weebly site verification etc should be added here.
Hide site from search engines

If you do not want search engines to show the content of your site in search results, check the box next to “prevent search engines from crawling your site“.

If your website is a work in progress, you may want to hide it from search engines until you are ready to go public.

There are also other instances where you may need to hide a site from search engines. For example, if you have duplicated your site for backup, or you are trying out a new design, you would want your site to be private.

The 301 redirect is very useful if you decide to change the names of your pages. Any time a page name is changed, configure a 301 redirect so that the visitors are automatically redirected from old page to the new one. For search engines, this help with migrating the rank from old page to new page. Read more about the benefits of Weebly 301 redirect here.

Check the Weebly SEO Tips to learn more about how to bring more traffic to your weebly website.

3. Weebly Ecommerce Settings

Weebly eCommerce settings allow you to quickly link up your online store to PayPal or Google Checkout. For your Weebly eCommerce merchant account, you can use only one of PayPal or Google Checkout.

Once configured to use PayPal or Google Checkout, you can place the products any where on your site for sale. Buyers can add items to the cart.

At the checkout, the payment processing is actually handled by the provider you choose (PayPal or Google Checkout). Weebly does not process the payments. The payment processing performed by PayPal and Google Checkout is SSL Secure. Even though your Weebly website is not SSL secure, the payment processing part for your online store is SSL secure.

4. Weebly Mobile Optimization

For people visiting your website using a mobile device, Weebly mobile optimization performs automatic conversion of your site to a mobile friendly format. The mobile optimized site is more readable on smart phones with smaller screens. You can pick one of the available themes for your mobile version.

By default, the mobile optimization in Weebly is enabled. If you would rather like to present your mobile visitors with the same desktop version, un-check the “Enable Mobile” option. Check our tutorial to create a total custom mobile version for your Weebly website.

5. Add Multiple Editors in Weebly

The collaborated editing option in Weebly allows multiple individuals to edit your weebly wesbite. If you are an administrator, you can invite other individuals to edit your site and set the roles and permissions for them.

You can assign three different roles for additional editors – Administrator, Author or Dashboard Access.
Administrator Role

Administrators can edit all pages of the site, modify settings and publish changes. They have permission to edit any section of your site. If you are hiring a third party designer to help you with design & maintenance of your site, you may be adding them as Administrators.
Author Role

If you have multiple contributors updating content for your site, you can provide them with a restricted access to certain sections of your Weebly site.

You can also assign different levels of capabilities for different authors by providing some authors the ability to edit all pages, while allowing other authors to edit the selected pages only.

Check the box “Disable access to publish changes to live site” if you do not want to let the authors publish changes directly. For those authors that do not have the privilege to publish, an administrator must approve the changes before they are published.

The “Author” role is not available on Free Weebly accounts. Only the paid accounts have the ability to add Authors.
Dashboard Access Only

Editors with access to Dashboard access only, can not edit the content of the site. For editors with Dashboard access, you can set their access to view the website stats or manage form entries or manage the blog comments.

If you have other staff members who need to look into the form submissions and act on them, the option to manage form entries comes handy.

If you have guest writers writing blog posts for your site, you can assign an individual to manage the blog comments.

The dashboard access role in Weebly is not available for Free users. It is limited to paid users.

6. Archiving & Un-publishing Weebly website

You can archive your website created with Weebly for backup purposes. If you ever need to migrate to a different provider, the archived copy is what you need.

You can archive your site any time you wish. Weebly maintains the three latest copies. Note that these are for backup only and the archives can not be used for retrieval. More details on Weebly site backup.

If you do not want your site to be available for public any more, you can un-publish a published site. If you are testing out critical changes, you may want to temporarily un-publish the site or protect it with password so that the site is not available for the public during your trials.

A good understanding of Weebly Site settings is crucial for effectively managing your Weebly website.
